以前覺得梵谷很可憐是一個落魄的畫家，原來這條路是他自己選擇的一條殉道之路。

他的家族有人是畫商，他本來當畫商也當得好好的，應該是舒服的布爾喬亞(bourgeoisie)階級，但他很快發現這不是他的生命正確道路，他選擇跟他爸爸一樣去當牧師傳教，

但不清楚(可能我還沒念到)為何失敗，改當畫家，他做畫態度也跟傳道一樣是對神的奉獻。

...those people, eating their potatoes in the lamplight have dug the earth with those  very hands they put in the dish ,and so it speaks of manual labor, and how they have honestly earned their food.

這些燈下吃馬鈴薯的人，從盤中取食的用的是田裡挖番薯的同一雙手，因此這說明手的勞動，代表這些人正正當當地爭得自己的食物。
